I’ve received numerous emails asking about “What style(s) of Xingyiquan does Zheng Mingxing practice or teach?”, I hope this post will answer your question.
What style of Xingyiquan does Zheng Mingxing practice?
- My shifu (sifu), Zheng Mingxing, has only one shifu, Ma Zhenzong (马振宗, 1910-1993), however he has studied under a lot of teachers throughout his martial arts journey. Over the years, he has learned many styles of Xingyiquan, including both Hebei and Shanxi Xingyiquan, and also Henan Xinyi Liuhequan.
- Zheng Mingxing simply calls his style of martial arts as “Xingyiquan”, without any locality or surname attached to it (as a sub-style). He believes all Xingyiquan styles share the theories and core, there many different ways to express the art. Zheng’s concept is that any style is merely an expression of oneself, such as, Sun style Xingyiquan was only Sun Lutang’s way to express his art based upon his own conditions, understandings and background, which is custom made to fit and suit he himself. The naming of martial arts based on provinces is also an expression of the cultures and characters of that particular locality.
- Zheng Mingxing’s Xingyiquan is known as “Xiaojia Xingyiquan” (Small Frame Xingyiquan) in the wushu (martial arts) circle of Zhejiang Province due to its distinctive characteristics of small movements and postures but yet extremely fast, powerful and sharp. Please be informed that “Xiaojia Xingyiquan” is only a name given by others martial artists, Zheng has never named his Xingyiquan, he simply calls it as “Xingyiquan”.
- To answer the question of “What style(s) of Xingyiquan does Zheng Mingxing practice or teach?”, if you must put a locality to his Xingyiquan, his Xingyiquan is based upon Hebei style Xingyiquan with a touch of Shanxi Xingyiquan and Henan Xinyiquan, otherwise, you can simply call it as “Xingyiquan“.
