Over the past few months, I’ve received some emails questioning why my posts of Sabah Xingyiquan category only shows Wuxingquan (Five-Element-Fist) videos.
Traditional Xingyiquan practitioners spend a great deal of time on Wuxingquan training from day to day basis, there has been an old saying that “if you can do Wuxingquan properly, then you can do Xingyiquan properly”. Wuxingquan is the root and foundation of Xingyiquan, whether it is Shierxing (Twelve-Animal-Form), Taolu (Forms) or Qixie (Weaponary), they are all based upon Wuxingquan.
We, the Sabah Xingyiquan gang, train our Xingyiquan in the traditional way and we spend long hours in Wuxingquan training. As experience martial artists, most of the guys have actually spent six month to a year to learn all of the five fists of Wuxingquan. It was not that I (Dennis) didn’t want to share my martial arts skill to others, it was they wanted to get a particular move “right” before they moved onto the next one. Some of guys had told me that traditional Xingyiquan has changed their attitudes towards martial arts, previous “fast food” orientated martial arts drives practitioners to learn more and more moves, more moves means you are more advance and higher rank even though most of your moves are immature.
The videos of Sabah Xingyiquan gang are for our own reference, Wuxingquan is the best judge of one’s improvement in Xingyiquan. Below is a video of Kahar after only six month into Xingyiquan, he has only learned the first three fist of Wuxingquan at that time, judge for yourself how solid is his foundation through traditional training.

I realize this was posted 2 years ago but this is the first time I saw this and I see a similarities to what my second sifu taught me in the opening and in Piquan. I have not seen that anywhere else but in that lineage which if I remember correctly may come out of Singapore. All the others I have trained with come out of mainland and the opening and Piquan are not exactly the same.
