The tale of Shang Yunxiang in Kenji (拳児), a martial arts Japanese manga series written by Matsuda Ryuchi and illustrated by Fujiwara Yoshihide.
Once upon a time, there was a man from Hebei Province named Shang Yunxiang, he studied Xingyiquan from his teacher, Li Cunyi.
Shang Yunxiang was so “clumsy” that he could not even do Piquan properly, as a result, Li Cunyi taught him nothing else but one simple technique, i.e. Bengquan.
Li Cunyi had other Xingyiquan teaching commitment and left his hometown. Shang Yunxiang had no option but to practice Bengquan over and over again for 3 years.
Li Cunyi returned after 3 years absent, all of his students demonstrated their skills upon Li’s homecoming except for Shang Yunxiang as he knew only one technique.
Shang Yunxiang demonstrated his Bengquan upon Li Cunyi’s request, and Li commented Shang had obtained the true meaning of Xingyiquan.
One of the students was not convinced with Li’s comment, and he requested a challenge with Shang Yunxiang
